What to ask before paying for a guided hunt

The questions that separate a good guided hunt from a disappointing one, before you send a deposit.

About the outfitter

Ask whether the outfitter or guide is licensed where the state requires it, and ask for references from recent clients you can call.

About the hunt

Ask where you will hunt (private land, leased land or public land), how the hunt is run, and how many hunters will be on the property at once.

About the price

Get the full price in writing: deposit, balance and when it is due, license and tag costs, trophy or harvest fees, lodging, meals, processing, tips and taxes. Ask what happens if weather cancels days or you cannot draw a tag.

Be wary of promises

No legitimate operator can guarantee a harvest of wild game. Ask what success means and how it is measured.
